THE RULES OF REGICIDE

A king is a piece.
A crown is a lifeline.

  1. Capture the king. Pieces move as in chess, but there is no check or checkmate. Kings may move into danger, stand next to each other, and be captured.
  2. Keep a king alive. You can have several kings. Losing one does not end the game while another survives.
  3. One final reply. When your last king falls, you get exactly one more move. Capture the opponent’s last king for a draw (stalemate); otherwise you lose if you still have no king.
  4. Crown a pawn. Promote to a queen, rook, bishop, knight, or king. A new king on your final reply saves you and play continues, unless you also capture the opponent’s last king, which is a draw.
  5. The familiar moves. Castling and en passant are included. Castling ignores attacks, but requires the original unmoved king and rook and a clear path. With kings remaining, no available moves means a draw.
